2014: A Year of Accomplishments for New York City Council

All these achievements were made by a New York City Council that has operated collaboratively and effectively. We're your City Council and we are here to work for you.

  • Government for the People

With rules reform we made funding more equitable and increased transparency and access.

  • Action for Struggling Workers

Your City Council secured $1.2 million in funding to support worker cooperatives and extended paid sick leave to more than 500,000 working New Yorkers.

  • A Voice for all

We passed two bills that significantly limit NYC's cooperation with ICE and increased legal services for immigrant communities. IDNYC also provides the ID necessary for all New Yorkers to participate fully and freely in public life.

  • Investments in Our Children

We invested $15.2 million in Summer Youth Employment Programs, extended free school lunch to NYC's middle school students and created merit based scholarships for CUNY students.

  • Protections for NYCHA Residents

The Council protected New York City’s seniors by securing $17 million to keep 57 NYCHA community and senior centers open.

  • A Commitment to Public Safety

We secured $6.2 million to hire 200 police administrative aides to free 200 police officers from desk jobs. These officers were deployed to patrol and enforcement functions, ensuring more support for community policing.

  • Support for Nonprofits

The City Council allocated $2.5 million to establish a Communities of Color Nonprofit Stabilization Fund for nonprofits serving majority Asian, Latino and/or Black communities. The first Council fund of its kind, CCNSF aims to build the capacity of New York City nonprofits, in recognition of the fact that organizations led by people of the community are best equipped to meet the needs of the community.
